Later #48 a movie: ‘Sleeping Beauty’

Saw the movie, ‘Sleeping Beauty,’ starring Emily Browning (Lucy aka Sarah). This is a story of a young woman who has no boundaries in her quest for experiences and survival. A university student with the usual range of casual jobs responds to an ad in a university paper. She takes up a job as a lingerie waitress for private parties for the alluring sum of $250/hour, ‘with opportunities for promotion.’
Being the vulnerable and reckless young woman, she agrees to place herself at enormous risk to ‘sleep’ with a range of dubious though wealthy male characters. The men and Lucy in turn place their absolute trust in the madam, Clara, a stiff-necked character who applies military precision to construct the mood and meter of each scene. There are some similarities with ‘Eyes Wide Shut’ at least visually, but this is far grittier, as you would expect of an Australian production. Besides Browning, the acting is good rather than great. The atmosphere is haunting even without the assistance of a musical score. Beware, you may end up walking out before the end if you find the subject matter gratuitous, but it is worth the challenge to stay with it. 6/10.
