Harking back to the bleak days of the Lebanese civil war and the bloody struggle between Muslim and Christian in the 1970s, this is an interlocking story covering two generations: one, about a woman, Nawal, in search of a son, and the other about her children, now living in Canada, sent away by the dying wish of their mother to uncover the truth about her past and theirs.
As the movie shifts from past to present, we realise that not much changes in this timeless but complex landscape of killing and payback. A person, but particularly a woman, was not meant to survive the trials Nawal was forced to face in this harsh land. We learn that a person’s landscape and history have a larger influence on character and personality than we are prepared to acknowledge. Confronting and accepting these can help us to learn who we really are. What we find we may not like, but this is a movie about discovering the truth about ourselves and then learning about acceptance. 8/10
