Saw the opera, ‘The Giacomo Variations’ at the Sydney Opera House. This is a quaint opera covering the sexual exploits of the infamous Casanova, played by John Malkovich, and performed to Mozart by the Sydney Symphony. I enjoyed the rather in-your-face exploits of sexual romping without boundaries, at times crossing some very shocking ones, but leaving the moral questions for the audience to answer rather than the writer to tell.
The singing was sublime, at times seemingly impossible, with performers astride in missionary position. It could be criticised at some levels, although not being an opera ‘paramour,’ I find it difficult to voice criticism beyond Malkovich bungling a few lines and the sound in the Concert Hall not quite resonating. The performance receives a caning from critics and others (see the second link), but I left the performance content enough. 6/10.
